Home Sweet Home Made Even Sweeter

It may be fun to stay at the YMCA, but for homeless families, the YWCA can literally be a lifesaver. To help support these families, the YWCA embarked on an ambitious project to create a townhome-style housing community. Having worked with Tyler 2 in the past, the YWCA asked us to help. Needless to say, we jumped at the chance to give back and help give local families a new start.

Challenges and Solutions:

The project was expansive in scope, consisting of 11 stick-built townhome-style units with institutional components. Extensive site work that included water and soil management tested our problem solving skills while utility enhancements kept us busy with underground tie-in work, a new storm water drainage system and the installation of a new back-flow prevention system. The exterior siding of the two main buildings are highly detailed—just the way we like it. We spent countless hours bending copper and sealing the buildings to ensure the units would remain both moisture free and visually striking through the years.

The end result:

Get your green on: In a happy twist of fate, we were able to do more than just help out local homeless families; we were able to do our part for the environment as well. After plans had been approved, a funding opportunity was presented with the condition that the townhomes incorporate sustainable elements.  Quick response by the architect and Tyler 2 allowed for those improvements to be made and resulted in additional funding for the YWCA’s programs, and an Energy Star rating for the project. Since its completion in 2008, Families Together has housed over 40 families totaling 178 individuals ranging from newborns to 49 years in age. It’s enough to make you break into song.
