OR? Oh, My!

Tyler 2 knows hospitals — especially Carolinas HealthCare System’s Union West Ambulatory Surgery Center, where we had completed a previous surgery center and operating room. So when it came time to upfit the new facility and add a second OR … well, who you gonna call? Tyler 2.

The challenge:

Hospitals need operating rooms, even during construction. And the Division of Health Service Regulation's inspections are rigorous. So our biggest challenge in upfitting the 530 sf second operating room of the Union West Ambulatory Surgery Center was the fact that it was adjacent to the first OR and the Clean/Sterile Corridor. Infection Control measures were put in place to safeguard patients’ well-being, as well as to minimize the stress of dust, noise and vibrations for patients, families and OR staff.

The end result:

Let’s start with the easy stuff on this project designed by architects Wright McGraw Beyer: interior upfit for the reception area, office support, three pre/post bay recovery rooms and six prep rooms.

Things really get complex when you look at the infrastructure:  sewer/water, fire protection, emergency power with generator back-up, a new KVW transformer service, rooftop chiller and communication demark.

Now for a tour of the surgical wing: control wiring, X-ray, decontamination room, clean room, sterilization, surgical booms, Med Gas and Nurse Call, along with steel bracing and extensive MEP and sprinkler.

Because Tyler 2 knew both the building and the CHS staff, we were able to complete the project with no issues, despite the complexity of the work.
