Gym Me Buff It

Okay, gym rats, this project will get your heart rate up. It involves one 50+-year-old YMCA, 75,000 member visits every month and 10,400 sf of entrances, membership desk, Pro Shop, physical therapy area, deli serving line and dining room. Because we all need a little help getting fit at about the half-century mark, don’t we?

The challenge:

The Dowd YMCA near uptown Charlotte was built in 1959. With seven stories and 142,504 square feet, the Dowd Y is one of the oldest and largest YMCA facilities in the nation, as well as one of the most popular facilities in Charlotte. And 75,000 monthly member visits had created a lot of high-impact wear and tear. But as important as it was to improve the facility, it was equally important for the construction not to disrupt workout time for the hundreds of members who entered the building seven days a week. Use it or lose it, right?

The end result:

Getting fit requires endurance and flexibility and a determination to accomplish the impossible. And Tyler 2 crushed this extreme make-over. To meet the Y’s aggressive schedule for completion with minimal disturbance to day-to-day operations, we proposed four phases. Working with a team made up of YMCA staff, ADW Architects and construction manager Webb Clements, the entire renovation was completed in only three phases.

In the end, folks at a jacked YMCA called Tyler 2 “Top Dog” and extended the workout: Tyler 2 also worked with the Y to renovate its Pilates Studio and construct an equipment storage area in the Hines Gym.
