A Project That's Gone to the Dogs

For Tyler 2 Construction, being asked to help design and build a dog boarding and care facility was a little like Ghirardelli being asked to whip up a batch of brownies. Our proverbial tails were wagging at the thought.

The challenge:

Convert a former warehouse facility off South Blvd. in Charlotte into a dog boarding and care facility. We needed to make modifications to the exterior of the building, supervise utility work and manage the installation of a new heating and air control system ... all in 49 days!  Fortunately we’re just as passionate about our work as the Dogtopia staff is about theirs.

For this 8,625 SF project, we partnered with Priest Architecture and worked closely with the framing, steel stair, and chair lift vendors during the design submittal process to assure these components worked together, met code requirements, and fit within the area designated for the lift.  As the building was a split level, it required ADA modifications (for the humans, not the dogs).

During this coordination, it became apparent that modifications to the design were necessary, which ultimately enabled Tyler 2 to meet the tenant's requirements.  We didn’t even let the delivery of defective flooring materials cause us to misstep: if the owner could pour everything they had into this project, we certainly could too. We kept the project on schedule with minimal cost change.

We also constructed an ADA-compliant motorized chair lift to accommodate disabled patrons’ access to the upper level-facility operations in a very limited existing space. No challenge is too great when you’re helping an entrepreneur fulfill their dreams.

The end result:

Dogtopia is utopia for dogs. It’s a friendly, open play doggie zone where your dog can run, jump, and play to his heart’s content. Dogtopia also features a self-serve dog wash with waist-high tubs and an indoor play area.

We (and our Tyler 2 furry companions) even tested out the new digs when we finished, and found everything was up to snuff (sniff?) for canine customers.
