Patient Caring...Sweet

Bose surround sound, two 72-inch video monitors, color lighting—yes, it’s just another day at the hospital for Tyler 2. We love partnering with the healthcare industry to improve the experience of patients and families, but this innovative, first-in-the-nation Caring MRI Suite for Carolinas HealthCare System is one of our favorites.

The challenge:

CMC-Mercy’s Caring MRI Suite would allow patients to choose their own environment using visuals, lighting, and sound therapy to improve patient comfort and satisfaction. But when construction began, existing conditions did not match construction drawings for the MRI Scan Room, including ductwork with lined insulation not addressed in the scope of work. And the tight quarters did not offer a staging area for the construction.

The end result:

Tyler 2 met onsite with architect Design Strategies to redesign the wall, ceiling assemblies and a penetration panel for the 2,200 sf MRI. The new technology—which included iPad controls, music, LED mood lighting and image panels on the wall and ceiling required many revisions to the original drawings.  By coordinating three different drawings into one, and carefully scheduling subcontractors and materials, we were able to install new ductwork and ceilings through the entire space without impact to the schedule. All the impact is found in a humanized patient experience.
